How can you tell how fast a storm is moving on radar? ›

Velocity data is derived from the phase, or doppler shift of the returned energy. The radar's computers will calculate the shift and determine whether the precipitation is moving toward or away from the radar, and how fast, then apply a corresponding color to those directions and speeds.

In addition, the radar image will not show echos from precipitation that lies outside the radar's beam, either because the precipitation is too high above the radar, or because it is so close to the Earth's surface that it lies beneath the radar's beam.

Essentially, those lines on radar just show that air in the atmosphere is trying to move up, but something is preventing it from rising so far up that it could develop into showers and storms. Where the air is rising up in a convective roll, clouds often form, and small insects can be caught in the rising air.

According to experts, as many as 10-20% of speeding tickets are issued in error because the radar didn't read your speed accurately. When the officer measures your speed from a moving police car, then the error rate jumps to as high as 30%.

A patch of dark red moving toward your location means there's a thunderstorm on the way. A line of heavy precipitation moving in unison is a sign of a squall line that could pack gusty winds.

As the beam travels away from the radar source, it gets higher above the ground due to the curvature of the Earth. Therefore, if the precipitation is restricted to very low levels, especially within a few hundred feet from the ground, the radar beam might overshoot it, leading to undetected rainfall.

A phenomenon called "ducting" can cause the radar beam to be reflected toward the ground, showing non-existent precipitation. Ducting can occur in the early-morning hours if the surface temperature is cooler than the air aloft. Birds and bugs flying into the path of the radar beam may also produce false radar echoes.

However, what we see on the radar could be falling but not reaching us when it hits the ground. This is called virga. Virga is rain that evaporates before it hits us here on the ground. It could be raining a mile up in the atmosphere but that rain evaporates as it falls down through drier air.

The most common ones used in the United States are those pulse radars that make up the National Weather Service's NEXRAD (NEXt Generation RADar) WSR-88D system and the less common, but more sophisticated, phased-array radars used mainly by the military and in atmospheric science research.
